The 8th European Conference on Ecological Modelling to be held in October 2014 will host keynote talks on the aspects, methodologies and applications of the ecological modelling field. Over 200 contributors will investigate the capacity to assess, model and predict ecological responses to multiple forcing, including human activity and climatic changes, and will work towards integrating African science into this area.

This event aims to bring together the ecological modelling expertise from a range of backgrounds as well as promote the participation of scientists and students from Africa in the ecological modelling community. It will launch the birth of an African chapter of the society.

Approximately 110 scientists from 32 countries all over the world and representing all continents gathered at the 8th European Conference on Ecological Modelling. Keynote talks targeted different aspects, methodologies and applications of the ecological modelling field. A select set of papers were considered for publication, with the intention to organise more meetings, schools and workshops.

The three main objectives which were successfully met. The conference represented a multidisciplinary cross-sectorial approach to science; the 133 presented works showed that ecological models can contribute to supporting such an approach. The workshop also promoted the participation of scientists and students from Africa; more than 37% of the participants were from African countries including Morocco, Tunisia, South Africa, Ethiopia, Sudan and Kenya. Finally, the African chapter was established under the patronage of the organisers and ISEM to promote ecological modelling throughout the African continent, provide information regarding future study opportunities, workshops and conferences and to create a forum for communication.
