Building on UNESCO’s efforts to mobilize the global community to engage women and girls in science, Fisheries and Ocean Canada and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, jointly with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission to host a virtual event titled “Making waves for the Ocean Science: Empowering women and girls in the Ocean Decade”.

The discussion will address questions such as: What does diversity mean for you? What positive impacts can be expected from having more women and girls participating in  the Ocean Decade and contributing to its outcomes? How might greater diversity, including more girls and women in STEM, contribute to  scientific innovation and the ambitions of the Ocean Decade?

This event will also demonstrate the importance of peer networks and role models in fostering interest in women and girls to pursue careers in ocean science, as well as provide concrete examples of innovative mechanisms and technologies to help achieve this objective.
