VLIZ has announced they are accepting nominations for the triennial scientific Dr Edouard Delcroix Prize, to be awarded to a researcher or research team in recognition of a significant scientific study on the links between ocean and human health. Established in the name of Dr Edouard Delcroix (1891-1973), a Blegian orthopaedic surgeon and pioneer in thalassotherapy, the €25,000 prize aims to foster research which contributes to:
- an improved understanding of the actual and potential health benefits from marine and coastal ecosystems, e.g. the “Blue Gym” effect, marine biodiscovery, thalassotherapy and functional revalidation in seawater; and
- a reduction in the burden of human diseases linked with marine environmental causes, e.g. harmful algal blooms and other biogenic toxins, eutrophication, transmission of pathogens and chemical pollutants and the impact of human activities such as aquaculture.
There is also a €2,500 Dr Edouard Delcroix Incentive Award, which will be awarded to an early career scientist.
For more information on the prize, please see the award's page. The deadline for submissions is 31 December 2019.
