Due to the covid 19 sanitary crisis, and as decided by the Steering Committee in June 2020, the 2021 General Assembly meeting of EuroMarine will be held online. Sessions will be spread over two days (26-27 Jan. 2021). The physical meeting that should have taken place in Lisbon (Portugal) at the invitation of MARE is postponed to a later date.

Because most EuroMarine activities funded under the 2019 budget had to be postponed given the sanitary and travel restriction context, the usual scientific reporting session will not take place. Video formats will instead be used and made available online in the future in order to report on activities funded by EuroMarine, upon completion of these activities.

The programme of the General Assembly meeting (where all times are CET) includes four main sessions:

  • On Day 1:
    • An introductory session will include summary 2020 reporting by the EuroMarine Chairs and OYSTER Chairs and the presentation of steps taken to provide EuroMarine with a new coordination and secretariat in 2021 after IRD and CNRS announced that they would withdraw from their present roles and intended to become normal members in 2021.
    • EuroMarine Network strategy development session will be devoted to (a) preliminary results of strategy consultancy work on the future of EuroMarine and (b) the discussion in breakout groups of key questions for the future of EuroMarine, which represents an opportunity to jointly imagine the network’s future structure and the role we can play as we move forward. This session will take into account any expressions of interest received from member organisations to coordinate and offer a new home and secretariat to EuroMarine. The deadline to submit such expressions of interest is 25 January 2021, 13:00 CET. The deadline to submit a subsequent formal offer is 19 February 2021, 17:00 CET.
    • A formal business and decision-making session.
  • On Day 2:
    • The whole day will be devoted to a science & scientific strategy session (during which different topics will be addressed in parallel by several groups, with a focus on the membership consultation - launched on 24 November 2020 - on EuroMarine & the United Nations Decade Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (The Decade). This session will aim at: (1) a Decade science program for EuroMarine; (2) a EuroMarine contribution to the kick-off event of the Decade (31 May-2 June 2021, Berlin).

Going online represents both a challenge and the opportunity to expand participation in the meeting (notably on Day 2) beyond its usual General Assembly representatives audience.

Please register for the GA meeting by at the earliest and no later than 24 January 2021 under

The EuroMarine General Assembly (GA) meeting took place online, using the Zoom platform, on 26-27 January 2021.

There were 126 online registrants (81 for Day 1 and 123 for Day 2).

Actual participants in the online meeting amounted to 65 on Day 1, 80 on Day 2 (including three participants who joined using the meeting links without having registered) and 93 in total.
Of the 47 full member organisations that EuroMarine counted in 2020, 40 were present on Day 1 (38 of which were represented by their GA representative or a formally nominated substitute) and 37 on Day 2.

The main purpose of the 2021 GA meeting was to discuss and facilitate the transition in 2021 towards a new coordination mandate and team.

Day 1 (26 Jan.) was devoted to: summary reporting by the EuroMarine Chairs and OYSTER Chairs; a network strategy development session; and a short formal business and decision-making session.

Day 2 (27 Jan.) was entirely devoted to a scientific session that focused on a renewed EuroMarine science programme for the UN Decade of Ocean Science (informed by the GA consultation launched on 24 November 2020).
