OYSTER (Orienting young scientists of EuroMarine) is looking for enthusiastic, engaged and creative early career scientists who are willing to play an important role in advocating EuroMarine and promoting the role and relevance of marine science and the ocean in general. OYSTER in particular seeks individuals with interests/knowledge in science communication, social media, and web sites development to join the working group.


The was set up in early 2019 following the success of the 2018 . The goal of OYSTER is to support a bottom-up approach and help understand and develop the marine landscape of early career researchers. The working group currently consists of 18 early career scientists from across EuroMarine member institutes. The specific goals of OYSTER are to:

  • Establish a permanent network designed and driven by young researchers themselves.
  • Engage, empower and assist early career marine scientists by establishing a platform for networking and collaboration.
  • Support EuroMarine bottom-up approach by communicating early career marine scientists’ matters of concern to develop ways the network can help to address these concerns.

Eligible candidates are PhD students or post-doctoral researchers within 5 years after the completion of PhD and who are based at a . Individuals should have experience in marine-based research and be willing to use their creativity, imagination, communication and interpersonal skills to help promote marine science and EuroMarine activities. To enable a maximum representation of EuroMarine members, OYSTER would particularly like to invite applications from EuroMarine institutes which do not yet have an early career researcher in the OYSTER network (a list of these can be found below).

The position will commence in January 2022 and commitment for one-year is required*. This timeframe will allow members to follow projects from start to finish. OYSTER workshop attendance is funded and during these workshops (either in-person or remote) early career researchers will engage with topics such as open science, PhD/post-doctoral responsibilities and career development, as well as contribute to the design of the OYSTER plans for capturing and communicating views and concerns of early career marine scientists.
