OYSTER (Orienting young scientists of EuroMarine) is looking for enthusiastic, engaged and creative early career scientists who are willing to play an important role in advocating EuroMarine and promoting the role and relevance of marine science and the ocean in general. OYSTER in particular seeks individuals within the field of marine social science to join the group.

Background

The OYSTER network was set up in early 2019 following the success of the 2018 Young Scientists Working Group. The main goal of OYSTER is to support a bottom-up approach and to help understand and develop the marine landscape of early career researchers. The working group currently brings together 18 early career scientists from EuroMarine member institutes. The specific goals of OYSTER are to:

• Establish a permanent network designed and driven by young researchers themselves
• Engage, empower and assist early career marine scientists by establishing a platform for networking and collaboration
• Support EuroMarine bottom-up approach by communicating early career marine scientists’ matters of concern and help to address them. To carry out and follow up OYSTER activities, members meet once a month online (around 1 hour), although frequent participation via online applications (Slack/Teams) is required to build, develop and carry out OYSTER projects and activities. OYSTER organizes a workshop every year where the members can meet in person.

Application

Eligible candidates are PhD students or post-doctoral researchers within 5 years after the completion of PhD and who are based at EuroMarine Member Organisations or Invited Member Organisations. Individuals should have experience in marine-based research and be willing to use their creativity, imagination, communication and interpersonal skills to help promote marine science and EuroMarine activities. To enable a maximum representation of EuroMarine members, OYSTER would particularly like to invite applications from EuroMarine institutions which do not yet have an early career researcher in the OYSTER network. The position will commence in January 2023 and commitment for one-year is required*. This timeframe will allow members to follow projects from the start till the end. OYSTER workshop attendance is funded and during these workshops (either in-person or remote) early career researchers will engage with topics such as open science, PhD/post-doctoral responsibilities and career development, as well as contribute to the design of the OYSTER plans for implementing our communication strategy and address the concerns of early career marine scientists.

* If an OYSTER member leaves the EuroMarine institute they will be allowed to stay in the network until the end of the year.
