The Department of Marine Sciences, University of Gothenburg (Sweden) is seeking a PhD researcher. The PhD-student will work primarily with field and laboratory experiments on the brown seaweed Fucus vesiculosus in order to investigate adaptive evolution of traits related to biotic (primarily herbivory) and abiotic environmental difference in various habitats. The PhD-student will investigate and quantify adaptations/traits (chemical, physiological, morphological) as well as selection differentials and gradients in natural populations. He/She will conduct breeding and common garden experiments, selection and transplantation experiments and run feedings assays using littorinid and crustacean herbivores. Samples from feeding trials will, in collaboration with other CeMEB-partners, be used to investigate genetic and biochemical aspects of the defense pathway(s) involving herbivore recognition, secondary signaling cascades and up-regulation of biosynthetic machineries, using a combination of metabolomic and transcriptomic methods.
