What?
The FAIRSEAS Foresight Workshop brings together three major international research programmes—SOLAS, OASIS, and CLIVAR—to take stock of recent progress, identify critical knowledge gaps, and define priorities for the next decade of air–sea interactions research. The workshop provides a platform for coordination across observational, modelling, and remote sensing communities.
Why?
Air–sea interactions regulate weather, climate variability, and the global cycles of energy, water, carbon, and nutrients, directly influencing ecosystems, economies, and human well-being. Understanding these complex interactions requires sustained, interdisciplinary, and internationally coordinated research.

Key Objectives
- Review recent advances and remaining gaps in air–sea interactions research
- Strengthen international coordination across observational and modelling programmes
- Prioritise key research questions for the next decade
- Identify emerging technologies, methodologies, and data needs
- Support early-career researcher engagement and capacity building
Expected Outcomes A shared roadmap outlining priority research challenges and coordination needs
- A synthesis publication (e.g. BAMS article) capturing workshop recommendations
- Improved alignment of observational platforms, models, and data standards
- Initiation of follow-up workshops and collaborative project proposals
Expected Impact
By aligning major international programmes and mobilising a critical mass of expertise, FAIRSEAS will help shape future directions in Earth system science, climate prediction, and ocean observation. The workshop will strengthen Europe’s leadership in coordinated air–sea research, support the UN Decade of Ocean Science, and contribute to policy-relevant knowledge on climate change, pollution, and ecosystem resilience.
