30 Jun 2026
We are proud to announce that EuroMarine has been endorsed as a Decade Implementing Partner of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) , contributing to the Decade through funding, capacity building and collaboration.
The recognition was announced on World Oceans Day, 8 June 2026, as the Ocean Decade — coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO — unveiled 73 new Decade Actions under this year's theme, "Reimagine: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean." EuroMarine is one of two organisations newly designated as Decade Implementing Partners in this round, a role created to strengthen science–policy–society engagement across the global movement.
As an interdisciplinary network of 51 European marine organisations and research institutes, EuroMarine and its members are fully engaged in advancing the Decade's objectives: supporting ocean science, fostering collaboration across disciplines and borders, and helping deliver on SDG 14, Life Below Water. As a Decade Implementing Partner, EuroMarine will connect researchers, Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) and science–policy actors across Europe to incubate new Decade Actions and foster alignment across initiatives.
Five years into its implementation, the Ocean Decade has mobilised thousands of partners worldwide to co-design and co-deliver transformative ocean solutions, advancing its ten Challenges from local communities to global policy. Its vision — "the science we need for the ocean we want" — speaks directly to EuroMarine's own mission of connecting Europe's marine research community and turning shared knowledge into collective action.
This endorsement reinforces our commitment to bringing Europe's marine research community into the global movement to reimagine our relationship with the ocean.
Congratulations to all the newly endorsed Decade Actions and partners!
EuroMarine members and partners who would like to contribute can also take part in the Call for Decade Actions No. 11/2026 , open until 31 August 2026.
