There is a vacancy for a tenured associate professor in marine geoscience at the Department of Earth Science, University of Bergen. The University is conducting a broad search for candidates within the field of marine geoscience who are developing strong research that will contribute to understanding the geological, geophysical and geochemical processes in the marine realm.

The position will contribute to expanding the research and education in marine geology and marine geophysics. These are topics that are currently in high demand in connection with the establishment of infrastructure for renewable energy offshore Norway (for example offshore wind installations).

Work tasks/research field:

The university is looking for a candidate with a proven track record and keen interest in strengthening both the education and research portfolio of the Department of Earth Science, and who will actively contribute with developing fundamental geoscientific knowledge.

The ideal candidate is an early- to mid-career scientist, with expertise in marine geoscience, who is prepared to take on a leading role in organizing marine cruise activities and teaching of marine geoscience. The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain a vigorous, externally funded research program in the field of marine geosciences and, in the process, contribute new knowledge and train students with strong marine geoscientific competence to facilitate the energy transition in Norway and the world.

Candidates should complement the existing marine geological and geophysical research activity in the department and contribute to the supervision of MSc and PhD projects. As the host department of the Centre for Excellence in Education iEarth, the Department of Earth Science is committed to developing a teaching culture that encourages and supports student-centered, active teaching methods in higher education.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must have a doctoral degree or equivalent qualifications within marine geoscience.
  • Experience with and ability to conduct marine scientific cruises is a requirement.
  • Prior cruise leadership experience is an advantage.
  • Broad geoscientific competence and -experience with regional to local scale marine sedimentary processes on shelves and/or shelf margins is a requirement.
  • Experience with glaciated margins and glacial processes is an advantage.
  • Experience with geological and/or geophysical techniques relevant for investigating the physical processes and properties of the seafloor and shallow subsurface will be considered an advantage.
  • Applicants should have a strong peer-reviewed publication record within the above-mentioned fields commensurate with their career stage.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to teach and supervise students within relevant themes in marine geoscience on all levels. Teaching and supervision experience within relevant subjects must be documented.

Your application must include:

  • CV
  • Diplomas, references
  • A complete list of publications
  • A brief outline of the applicant’s interest and motivation to apply for this position, as well as a summary of the most important research results (2-3 pages).
  • Educational competence documented in an educational portfolio (see above).
  • A list of academic work particularly relevant for consideration in the assessment, including information about where this work was published.
  • The names of three referees, where at least one is familiar with your teaching capabilities and experience.
  • The application and appendices with certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded at Jobbnorge. Applications sent to individuals per email, will not be considered.
