The Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA—University of Algarve, Portugal) is organising the "International Advanced Course on Anthropogenic Impacts in the Deep Sea", which will take place in Faro, Portugal, from September 30 to October 4, 2024.
This advanced course is open to 20 participants with an interest in improving their knowledge of the anthropogenic impacts in the deep sea, particularly those related to ecotoxicology.
The course will provide a broad perspective on the deep-sea ecosystems, focusing on chemosynthetic environments, and will provide an overview of the current research on the different anthropogenic impacts affecting the deep sea, such as pollution, deep-sea mining, climate change and noise. The available methodologies used in ecotoxicology, such as biomarkers and omics will also be presented.
This overview will be followed by hands-on experience to learn methodologies related to assessing these impacts. This will be achieved through fieldwork, laboratory methods and data analysis. The applicability of the data obtained will be further demonstrated with examples of environmental risk analysis.
To finalize, the relevance of acquiring this type of scientific data in terms of supporting decision-making and the definition and implementation of policies will be explained under the international marine environmental law.
Registration deadline: August 2, 2024
