The Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB) is looking for a Postdoc Scientist Ocean Modeler with experience in multi-platform observing data assimilation to join their headquarters in Palma, Balearic Islands, Spain.
The candidate will be responsible for improving Western Mediterranean OPerational modelling System (WMOP) model forecast skills through multi-platform data assimilation, including new data sources (high-resolution altimetry, gliders and HF radar) in the Western Mediterranean Sea region.
The WMOP - Western Mediterranean OPerational modelling System - high resolution ocean forecasting system is a regional configuration of ROMS with EnOI-like sequential data assimilation scheme. Model improvements are expected in the forecasting capability of mesoscale dynamics in coastal areas, on surface currents, sea level anomaly, temperature and salinity fields. The processing scripts developed in this work will be made available on collaborative coding software websites distributed within and outside the project using dedicated open repositories (e.g. GitHub, GitLab). The successful candidate will work within the Modelling and Forecasting Facility, with both close interactions with the rest of SOCIB facilities and international collaborations as part of the FOCCUS project.
Tasks and responsibilities
The new team-member will be in charge of carrying out the activities related to the FOCCUS project, in particular:
- Implementation of new observation operators allowing multi-platform data assimilation of new coastal data sources (e.g. high-resolution altimetry data, gliders and HF radars) in the Western Mediterranean Sea.
- Analysis of WMOP model forecast skills
- Evaluation of the impact of new data sources on model performance
- Optimization and cleaning of processing scripts
- Participating to FOCCUS project activities including regular meetings and timely elaboration of milestones and deliverables
- Dissemination of results in scientific peer review papers, internal reports, participation in conferences and outreach activities
Applicants should send a CV and all the required documentation to foccus-ocean-modeler@socib.es.
