A new Postdoctoral researcher position is open at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), Crete, Greece in 'Seagrass Blue Carbon Dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea'

Position Description:

The postdoctoral researcher will undertake transformative research aimed at reconstructing the environmental history of a degraded seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) meadow impacted by aquaculture practices in Crete (Greece). The study will focus on assessing the dynamics of blue carbon – including stocks, sequestration rates and CO2 fluxes - following meadow degradation and natural recovery processes.

Additionally, the postdoc will be actively involved in innovative seagrass restoration activities aimed at enhancing seagrass ecosystem services. This role includes transnational collaborative efforts with other Mediterranean countries, as well as engaging with local public authorities and private stakeholders, by advocating for the adoption of seagrasses as nature-based solutions within the sphere of nature restoration and growth of the blue economy.

Candidate Profile:

  • PhD in Marine Biology, Marine Science, Oceanography, or a closely related field.
  • Strong publication record and experience in carbon cycling, biogeochemistry, seagrass ecosystems, or related areas.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, statistical methods, and relevant software (e.g., R, GIS).
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • SCUBA diver 2-stars (EFR & Rescue Diver level)

Offer:

  • 2-year contract with a gross salary of 18,200 euros per year. Salary adjustments will be considered for those who have held a full-time contract in an academic institution within the public sector, following national regulations
