The OKEANO CSA implementing the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance (AAORIA) is thrilled to announce the launch of the virtual Summer School titled “Ocean and Climate Computational Modelling – Basics and Applications.” This event, set to take place on 23-27 September 2024, is an excellent opportunity for Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) to gain foundational knowledge in ocean modelling and its applications.
The Summer School is meticulously designed to cater to ECOPs from partner countries of AAORIA. Emphasising inclusivity, the programme seeks to foster a multicultural learning environment where participants can collaborate and grow. This initiative aligns with AAORIA’s mission to enhance scientific excellence in marine sciences through cooperative agreements including the Galway Statement, the Belém Statement, and the All-Atlantic Declaration. As part of a broader series dedicated to empowering ECOPs as the next generation of ocean leaders within AAORIA and the wider Atlantic Community, this Summer School reflects the Alliance’s commitment to supporting ECOPs and fostering collaboration across and along the Atlantic. The Summer School will seamlessly feed into a a series of planned activities focused on ECOPs, with an intergenerational dialogue session being organised at the 2024 Forum in Ottawa.
Connecting Ocean and Climate Science to Action – AAORIA priority areas
The Summer School is strategically aligned with two key priority areas outlined in the 2023 All-Atlantic Forum hosted by South Africa, namely:
- Increasing the understanding of the relationship between the ocean and climate: Participants will engage in outcome-oriented science aimed at mitigating and adapting to the consequences of climate change, particularly for the benefit of increasing the resilience of coastal communities.
- Coordinating Atlantic Ocean observing and improving modelling capacities: The course will enhance participants’ skills in support of marine ecosystems and biodiversity, reinforcing the importance of robust modelling in ocean and climate studies.
The course will touch upon both priority areas, focusing mainly on ocean and climate computational modelling.
Course Overview
Participants will embark on a 45-hour immersive journey, spread over five days, where they will delve into the basics of ocean and climate computational modelling. The course content covers essential topics including climate, oceanography, meteorology, and numerical modelling concepts. Key numerical modelling techniques like downscaling and data assimilation will be explored, providing a comprehensive understanding of their applications in real-world scenarios.
The course promises an interactive learning experience with a blend of lectures, group discussions, and exercises. Participants will also gain access to digital notes and publicly available oceanographic and climatological databases, enhancing their analytical skills.
