The University of Malta Maritime Platform (UMP) has announced the opening of its call for abstracts for the Innovation in Marine & Maritime Sustainable Developments: Research and Applications conference, scheduled for 2025. Interested parties are encouraged to submit their abstracts by 15th January 2025.

As the marine and maritime sectors face growing challenges from climate change, anthropogenic pressures, and evolving ocean dynamics, the conference will address the importance of enhancing resilience in coastal and marine environments. With a focus on safeguarding biodiversity, sustaining ecosystem services, and supporting industries such as fisheries, tourism, and renewable energy, the event aims to explore how innovation and research can provide solutions.

Conference Themes: The conference will explore the significant role of digital technologies in promoting sustainability within the marine and maritime sectors. Key themes include:

  • IT and Digitisation in Marine Industries: How digital advancements are improving operational efficiency, safety, and environmental responsibility in the sector.
  • Digital Twins & Simulation Models: The application of digital twins and predictive analytics to optimize vessel design, navigation, and emissions reduction.
  • IoT and Big Data: Leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) devices for real-time data collection and decision-making improvements.
  • Cybersecurity & Underwater Technologies: Addressing cybersecurity challenges in maritime infrastructures and using autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and sensors for oceanographic research.
  • Sustainable Maritime Transport: Engineering innovations aimed at creating greener, more energy-efficient maritime transport solutions.
  • Social and Governance Considerations: The role of governance frameworks in addressing current challenges and shaping policies for sustainable development.

The conference will also highlight strategies for integrating marine energy with conservation efforts, addressing overfishing, and enhancing the resilience of coastal communities.

Researchers, professionals, and experts in marine science, sustainability, and engineering are invited to submit abstracts related to the conference themes. Accepted abstracts will be featured in oral or poster sessions, fostering collaborative discussions and knowledge sharing.

Submit your abstract via the official event page: UMP Conference 2025.
