ICES is seeking an exceptional individual for the role of Science Committee Chair.

As Chair, you will work with an international team of marine experts to develop and implement ICES strategic vision, advancing marine science to support management advice in a world where seas and society´s need for management strategies are rapidly evolving. Overseeing and supporting scientific work for a wide range of topics, including climate change, fisheries, energy provision, protected areas, and governance, you will have a key role in ensuring that cutting-edge science forms the basis of dynamic ecosystem-based marine management in the North Atlantic and beyond.

The organization

ICES is an intergovernmental marine science organization with 20 member countries located around the North Atlantic.

ICES mission is to advance and share scientific understanding of marine ecosystems and the services they provide and to use this knowledge to generate state-of-the-art evidence-based advice to meet conservation, management, and sustainability goals. It's Strategic​ Plan defines ICES direction and priorities which are further articulated in ICES Sc​i​ence​ and Advisory plans​.

Person ​​specification

To be considered for this appointment, it is expected that you possess the following:

  • You are an internationally recognized and respected scholar within marine science and social-ecological systems, with a broad understanding of the key topics of ICES Science Plan and the capacity to identify and meet scientific development needs.
  • You have the ability to develop the organization's scientific strategy and vision and can identify and implement novel approaches and solutions to address complex challenges, anticipating emerging trends and developing long-term plans.
  • You have demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to engage and motivate a large network of experts.
  • You possess an understanding of ICES and the interaction between science and advisory processes.
