Every year, EuroMarine provides individual fellowship grants to enable Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to attend a professional development opportunity of their choice. In 2022, 22 young scientists received the fellowship support.

Here we share how nine of the 2022 fellows participants used their support from EuroMarine. Their activities included two courses on marine benthic taxonomy, specifically sponges and decapod crustaceans, and a two-week fieldwork mission in the Azores archipelago to participate in multiple marine biologging projects.

Read more to see how these fellows used their grants and why EuroMarine helped contributed to their research and future career. Find out more about the Fellowship Programme.

Name: Carlos Zampierri |

Institution: UNIPD, Italy

Program: AMARE-Med (Advanced school on Multispecies modelling Approaches for ecosystem based marine REsource management in the MEDiterranean Sea)

“I learnt new tools I can apply to my current PhD research and to future projects. Moreover, I met other researchers from the Mediterranean region with whom I can now share my work and fruitful ideas.”

Name: Viktoria Litsi |

Institution: HCMR, Greece

Program: Advance and Rescue Diver Training Course

“The training gave me the opportunity to actively participate in field campaigns, collect my own seagrass samples and conduct underwater experiments.”

Name: Pavanee Annasawmy |

Institution: UBO, France

Program: MetaBioDiv training

“This training was beneficial to me because I learnt the necessary tools to process and analyse genetic sequencing data, to detect errors in sequences, use existing online DNA databases for cross-check and cross-referencing, and to further develop my autonomy in bio-analysis and successfully complete my postdoc.”

Name: Inês Filipa Cigarro Morão |

Institution: MARE, Portugal

Program: Biology and Conservation of Sea Turtles International In-Water Course

"This course presented an excellent opportunity to improve the skills and knowledge that I have acquired during my short time in scientific research, and especially during my masters and now in my PhD, working in ecotoxicology and conservation of sea turtles.”

Name: Migel Ggandra |

Institution: CCMRA, Spain

Program: Fieldwork mission in the Azores archipelago

“I believe that this grant will represent a fundamental step not only in the progress of my PhD project but also in my development as a researcher and marine ecologist.”

Name: Nerea Pineiro Juncal

Institution: CSISC, Spain

Program: AMARE-Med (Advanced school on Multispecies modelling Approaches for ecosystem based marine REsource management in the MEDiterranean Sea)

“This experience gave me the opportunity to learn more about spatial and multispecies models, and about the management strategies evaluation. . All the knowledge acquired during this course will be undoubtedly very useful for the development of my thesis and my future career.”

Name: Jose Fernadez |

Institution: UB, Spain

Program: A field trip to collect the marine biodiversity information

“Undoubtedly, this activity has been a tipping point in my career because it allowed me to continue shedding light on the knowledge of resilience for conserving it efficiently in the postdoc period. Thanks to the EuroMarine fellowship, I can test and improve the developed resilience model with empirical data.”

Name: Alba Marina Cobo Viveros |

Institution: CSISC, Spain

Program: Courses on marine benthic taxonomy in sponges and decapod crustaceans

“The grant received from EuroMarine has contributed to my research and future career by allowing me to expand my knowledge on two taxonomic groups that are important in the work I am currently carrying out.”

Name: Marta Monterio |

Institution: UARV-CESAM, Portugal

Program: Data Exploration, Regression, GLM & GAM with introduction to R

“Knowing how to properly conduct data analysis is always important and thanks to the EuroMarine grant, I was able to learn from some of the best experts iIn the field.”
